Agrégation des sous-éléments de qualité de l’élément de qualité « Flore autre que phytoplancton » ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence.
The Water Framework Directive uses the “One-out, all-out” (OAOO) principle in assessing water bodies (i.e. the worst status of the elements used in the assessment determines the final status of the water body). Combination of multiple parameters within a biological quality element (BQEs) can be done in different ways. This study analysed several aggregation conditions within the BQE "Flora other than phytoplankton" (intertidal macroalgae, subtidal macroalgae, eelgrass beds and opportunistic blooms) using monitoring data collected along the Channel and Atlantic coastline. Four aggregation criteria were tested on two sets of data collected between 2004 and 2014: OOAO, average, intermediate method between OOAO and average and a method taking into account an...

Descriptions of Cottoniella fusiformis, Branchioglossumcf. minutum and Frikkiella searlesii (Rhodophyta, Ceramiales) from the Brazilian continental shelf Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Vinícius Peruzzi de; Valentin,Yocie Yoneshigue.
The diversity and distribution of marine macroalgae along the Brazilian coast have been investigated in detail. However, information about the deep-water macroalgal flora remains scarce, available mostly in scattered publications or gray literature. In this context, the aim of this study was to describe three specimens of Rhodophyta (Cottoniella fusiformis, Frikkiella searlesii and Branchioglossum cf. minutum) collected in the deep waters of the continental shelf off the coast of the state of Espírito Santo during expeditions of the program Evaluating the Potential of Living Resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone. The morphology and distribution of the collected species are detailed, and the taxonomic and biogeographic implications are discussed.

Diversity Assessment of Lotic Macroalgal Flora by the Application of Taxonomic Distinctness Index Biota Neotropica
Tonetto,Aurélio Fajar; Bispo,Pitágoras Conceição; Branco,Ciro Cesar Zanini.
The main aim of this study was to assess the diversity of four stream algal divisions (Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta, Ochrophyta and Rhodophyta) by comparing results obtained with taxonomic distinctness index and diversity patterns of previous studies. The data were obtained from a study made in 1000 stream segments in North American biomes. The taxonomic arrangement of the taxa was created from species to division level in order to obtain the taxonomic tree, which is used in taxonomic distinctness index. The results of taxonomic distinctness index showed that stream macroalgal diversity was different from that commonly found. Herein, Ochrophyta was the division with the highest diversity, whereas in previous studies Chlorophyta has been in the first...

Ecological distribution of stream macroalgae in different spatial scales using taxonomic and morphological groups Rev. Bras. Bot.
Krupek,Rogério Antonio; Branco,Ciro Cesar Zanini.
We examined the ecological distribution of macroalgal communities in streams using species groups (taxonomic units = algal phyla, and morphological = morphological types) with similar structures and functions instead of the species themselves. The study was conducted from June to July/2007 in two drainage basins located in mid-southern region of Paraná State , Brazil. Evaluations of macroalgal communities took into consideration the following spatial scales: the drainage basin (the Pedras river and Marrecas river basins), shading regime (open and shaded stream segments), mesohabitats (riffles and pools), and microhabitats (sampling units of 0.05m2). A total of 29 taxa (23 subgeneric, one generic, and five vegetative groups) were identified. On these, 12...

Effects of iron-ore particles on propagule release, growth and photosynthetic performance of Sargassum vulgare C. Agardh (Phaeophyta, Fucales) Rev. Bras. Bot.
NASSAR,CRISTINA A.G.; LAVRADO,HELENA P.; YONESHIGUE-VALENTIN,YOCIE.
The effect of iron-ore particles on the propagule release and growth of Sargassum vulgare C. Agardh was tested under treatments with different concentrations of iron-ore particles: 0.1, 1.0, 10.0 g.L-1 and a solution of 10.0 g.L-1 of filtered iron-ore. Filtered seawater was used as control. Photosynthesis vs. irradiance (P-I) curves were calculated for S. vulgare in the presence of iron-ore and in seawater. There was no significant difference in the number of propagules released by the receptacles or in the percentage of zygote formation among the treatments. The released propagules acted like aggregation centers for the particles, those more heavily coated with iron (10.0 g.L-1) exhibiting the highest sinking velocity (32.6 ± 9.8 mm.s-1). No difference in...

ENSAYOS DE ACTIVIDAD BIOLÓGICA Y ECOLOGÍA QUÍMICA DE EXTRACTOS ORGÁNICOS DE MACROALGAS DEL CARIBE COLOMBIANO Boletín de Investigaciones
Díaz R.,Martha Cecilia; Bula Meyer,German; Zea,Sven; Martínez,Alejandro.
This study evaluates the biological activity and possible deterrance played by organic crude extracts from six Phaeophyta and two Rhodophyta algae from Southern Caribbean. Bioessays were carried out using concentrations equivalent to those present in algae tissue. Species in general did not show high citotoxic activity. However Dictyota pulchella, showed a delay in the mitotic process for cells stage XVI. Extracts from Dictyota bartayresiana, D. pulchella, Sargassum cymosum and Cladophyllum schnetteri, inhibited S. partitus feeding under laboratory conditions. Nontheless, only extracts from D. bartayresiana and C. schnetteri showed this activity in the field.

Devreker, David; Lefebvre, Alain.
This report is the second assessment of French marine water eutrophication status (descriptor 5) done in the framework of the MSFD. The goal of this report is to determine if French marine water reach the Good Ecological State as defined by the MSFD. It stands next to the initial evaluation made in 2012, from which it is an update. It introduces the second cycle of the Marine Environment Action Program. It shows that French marine waters, behind the 12 nm line, reach the GES as defined by the MSFD. Problems link to eutrophication occurs in marine waters above the 12 nm, where 6.5% of the area do not reach the GES.

First molecular analysis of the genus Bryopsis (Bryopsidales, Chlorophyta) from Brazil, with an emphasis on the Pernambuco coast Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Marcella Guennes Tavares de; Pereira,Sonia Maria Barreto; Benko-Iseppon,Ana Maria; Balbino,Valdir Queiroz; Silva Junior,Wilson José da; Ximenes,Caroline Feijão; Carvalho,Maria de Fátima de Oliveira; Cassano,Valéria.
ABSTRACT The green algal genus Bryopsis has simple morphology and high phenotypic plasticity, making it difficult to identify its species based on morphological characteristics alone. This study evaluated the diversity of Bryopsis in northeastern Brazil (the State of Pernambuco), based on morphological and molecular data using the markers tufA and rbcL. Molecular analyses were incongruent with morphology, demonstrating the existence of cryptic and polymorphic species in the genus. Of the four taxa cited for the area based only on morphological data (Bryopsis corymbosa, B. pennata, B. plumosa, Bryopsis sp.), only B. pennata was recorded. Typical specimens of B. pennata and B. plumosa were grouped with low genetic divergence, 0-0.21 % for tufA and no...

Glycoglycerolipids From Sargassum vulgare as Potential Antifouling Agents ArchiMer
Plouguerné, Erwan; De Souza, Lauro M.; Sassaki, Guilherme L.; Hellio, Claire; Trepos, Rozenn; Da Gama, Bernardo A. P.; Pereira, Renato Crespo; Barreto-bergter, Eliana.
Unraveling new environmentally friendly antifouling (AF) agents is one of the major quests currently facing marine biotechnology. Marine macroalgae represent a rich source of new compounds with promising biological properties, including AF activity, but most of the macroalgal compounds studied to date are terpenoids or polyphenolics. The aim of this work was to investigate the possible AF role played by a usually neglected class of marine natural products: glycolipids (monogalactosyldiacylglycerols – MGDG, digalactosyldiacylglycerols – DGDG and sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerols – SQDG) isolated from the Phaeophyceae Sargassum vulgare collected along the coast of south-eastern Brazil. Among the 18 extracts, fractions and sub-fractions tested, 3 sub-fractions...

High rate algal pond treatment for water reuse in a marine fish recirculation system: Water purification and fish health ArchiMer
Metaxa, Elisabeta; Deviller, Genevieve; Pagand, P; Alliaume, C; Casellas, C; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Regardless of the degree of closure of a recirculation system, effluents are produced and replacement water is needed, which limits the possibility of locating a seawater production system away from the shoreline. At the Palavas Ifremer station, in the south of France, a High Rate Algal Pond (HRAP) was operated during several years to treat the effluent from a recirculating aquaculture system before reusing it. The effect of the HRAP-treated water on the recirculation system and on the fish was investigated and the optimal algae growing conditions were defined. The experiments were carried out in three rearing systems: one flow through, one recirculating and one recirculating with a HRAP. The water flow rate, temperature, pH and salinity conditions were...

Impact of macroalgal dredging on dystrophic crises and phototrophic bacterial blooms (red waters) in a brackish coastal lagoon ArchiMer
Guyoneaud, R; De Wit, R; Matheron, R; Caumette, P.
The Prevost lagoon (Mediterranean coast, France), was subject to annual dystrophic crises caused by the biodegradation of opportunistic macroalgae (Ulva lactuca) in the past. These crises result in anoxic waters with subsequent blooms of Purple Sulphur Bacteria (red waters) which, by oxidizing sulphide, contribute to the reestablishment of oxic conditions in the water column. Mechanical dredging of the macroalgal biomass has been carried out in the lagoon since 1991 with the aim of preventing the ecological and economic disturbances caused by such crises. Dredging began just before the phototrophic bloom when the water was already hypoxic (O-2 = 0.7 mg . L-1) and contained sulphilde (H2S = 7.3 mg . L-1) and purple patches of phototrophic bacteria...

Impacts of green tides on estuarine fish assemblages ArchiMer
Paumier, A.; Tatlian, T.; Reveillac, E.; Le Luherne, Emilie; Ballu, S.; Lepage, M.; Le Pape, Olivier.
All around the world, an increasing proportion of estuarine systems are facing massive proliferations of green macroalgae, called green tides, in response to nutrient enrichment. The consequences of this perturbation for ichthyofauna that use estuarine systems as essential fish habitats remain understudied. To estimate these consequences, we combined outputs of both macroalgae proliferation and fish community surveys conducted for the European Water Framework Directive in thirteen estuaries in northwestern France, a region where green tides are of great concern. The approach revealed the influence of green tides on estuarine fish communities. The response of each community to the green tides differed according to their functional guild composition. Benthic...

Influence of laboratory cultivation on species of Rhodophyta physiological evaluations and antifungal activity against phytopathogens Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Machado,Levi Pompermayer; Matsumoto,Silvia Tamie; Cuzzuol,Geraldo Rogério Faustini; Oliveira Jr,Luiz Fernando Ganassali.
The present study examined changes that took place in the physiology of three species of Rhodophyta by analysing the concentration of pigments and non-structural carbohydrates, comparatively evaluating algae collected from nature and after 28 days of laboratory cultivation. Another objective of the study was to determine whether the species retain their antifungal potential after the period of laboratory cultivation, correlating the changes in physiology and those from bioactivity. After carrying out laboratory cultivation, the results indicated a trend, in the three species of macroalgae, towards a reduction in pigment concentrations, mainly in the phycobiliproteins. For the non-structural carbohydrates no response pattern of the macroalgae was observed...

Laboratory experiments examining inducible defense show variable responses of temperate brown and red macroalgae RChHN
ROTHÄUSLER,EVA; MACAYA,ERASMO C; MOLIS,MARKUS; WAHL,MARTIN; THIEL,MARTIN.
Macroalgae can defend themselves against generalist and specialist herbivores via morphological and/or chemical traits. Herein we examined the defensive responses (via relative palatability) of two brown (Lessonia nigrescens, Glossophora kunthii) and two red algae (Grateloupia doryphora, Chondracanthus chamissoi) from the northern-central coast of Chile against selected generalist meso-herbivores. Two laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate whether (i) algae can respond generally to grazing pressure of meso-herbivores (amphipods, isopods and juvenile sea urchins) and whether (ii) these algal responses were inducible. In order to examine palatability and thus effectiveness of responses, feeding assays were run after each experiment using fresh...

Limited interspecific variation in grazing susceptibility of the brown alga Lobophora to herbivory ArchiMer
Vieira, Christophe; Stenger, Pierre-louis; Moleana, Thibaud; De Clerck, Olivier; Payri, Claude.
The genus Lobophora is a notable benthic algal component of tropical coral reefs, capable of dominating large reef areas following coral mortality and herbivory declines. The alga, however, has been the object of contradictory observations in terms of susceptibility to herbivory. Unaware of the species-richness of this genus, most studies referred to Lobophora variegata, a species assumed to present various morphotypes and chemotypes, occupying diverse ecological niches. Variation in susceptibility to herbivory has been consequently interpreted as intraspecific variation in terms of morphology and chemical composition as well as differences in herbivore guild compositions and diet across different locations (e.g., habitat, reef, region). Recent taxonomic...

Macroalgal population and sustainability ArchiMer
Morand, Philippe; Merceron, Michel.
Algal blooms, often associated with eutrophication, are common in temperate regions in coastal lagoons and estuarine areas as well as in open seas. However, because of recent changes in water flows and sediment and nutrient loads in most rivers, eutrophication phenomena are now occurring in areas previously non affected. One of its most widespread and easily recognized effects in a coastal marine ecosystem is the excessive growths and drifts of macroalgae, to such a degree that the biomass becomes a significant problem. The nutrients, notably from anthropogenic origin, constitute a significant factor in the appearance of the blooms in coastal waters. Besides a background originating from natural areas and precipitations, nutrients come from agriculture,...

Macrophytobenthos des platiers rocheux intertidaux et semi-exposés da la région de Safi-Essaouira (Maroc occidental) ArchiMer
Birje, J; Verlaque, M; Poydenot, F.
In 1990, a study of the phytobenthos of the rocky intertidal platforms in the Safi-Essaouira region (Sidi Boulbra, Western Morocco) was carried out at three sites. The intertidal zonation was analysed along permanent transects, and a qualitative and quantitative study of two characteristic units of the eulittoral vegetation - the vegetation belt of Fucus spiralis and the communities of Florideophyceae - was made. One hundred and twenty-nine macroalgal taxa and three phases were listed: 19 Ulvophyceae, 19 Fucophyceae, 1 Bangiophyceae and 93 Florideophyceae. The intertidal communities of the area are typical of semi-exposed and unpolluted platforms of Western Morocco, in the eulittoral zone, most of the typical Fucales that occur along the NE Atlantic coasts...

Natural Geography in Nearshore areas (NaGISA): The Nearshore component of the Census of Marine Life Gayana
Iken,Katrin; Konar,Brenda.
The Natural Geography in Shore Areas (NaGISA, the Japanese word for beach) project is the nearshore component of the Census of Marine Life program. NaGISA targets nearshore marine biodiversity in large macrophyte communities (hard bottom macroalgal communities and soft sediment sea grass beds) in a depth zonation from high intertidal to 15 m water depth. The overall goal of NaGISA is to quantify nearshore biodiversity on a global scale by conducting a longitudinal and latitudinal gradient. Outreach to the public, involvement of local communities in the sampling, and education are important components of the NaGISA program.

Photosynthetic responses to UV-radiation of intertidal macroalgae from the Strait of Magellan (Chile) RChHN
RAUTENBERGER,RALF; MANSILLA,ANDRÉS; GÓMEZ,IVÁN; WIENCKE,CHRISTIAN; BISCHOF,KAI.
For the first time, the photosynthetic performance of field-grown macroalgae from the Magellan Strait was evaluated with respect to their photoadaptation in the field and acclimation potential to ultraviolet radiation. Five macroalgal species were collected in the eulittoral and the upper sublittoral: Ulva intestinalis, Porphyra columbina, Adenocystis utricularis, Desmarestia confervoides and D. ligulata. Photosynthesis vs. irradiance (P-I) curves of macroalgae cultivated in the laboratory under low white light intensities more than a week were used to assess the acclimation potential to irradiance conditions in the field. Both, photosynthetic parameters referred to as maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax) and light saturation points of photosynthesis...
